A shoe is the plastic or wooden box that holds multiple decks of cards during a blackjack game. Most live tables use six- or eight-deck shoes so the dealer can deal many hands before reshuffling.

Penetration is the percentage of cards dealt from the shoe before the dealer reshuffles. Higher penetration means more hands per shoe, and the cut-card placement determines where the dealer stops dealing and starts a new shuffle.
